Without fail, health tops the chart of New Year’s Resolutions, we look to sort out our eating, drinking, and exercising habits with the aim of living a healthier lifestyle. The problem is that many of us fall for fad diets or excessively strict regimes, promising to attend the gym seven days a week and eat only vegetables and chicken breasts.
While this all sounds great in theory, the key to keeping up your resolutions well into the new year is making them achievable. For most of us, running multiple miles a day simply isn’t.
On the contrary, the answer to a healthier lifestyle and smashing your January post-holiday detox is, in fact, much easier than you’d think. Clue: 60% of your body is made up of it. That’s right – it’s water!

Water for Exercise
Most of us enter the new year intending to exercise more than in previous years. Whether you decide to hit the weight-lifting section of the gym to build muscle or keep things laid back with a subscription to a yoga class, you’ll need to stay hydrated to boost your chances of being successful in your new fitness regime.
Here’s why water is so beneficial for exercise.
- Replace the fluids you lose. When you exercise, you use fluids and electrolytes through sweat. Replacing them with water (especially the super-hydrating alkaline water) is a must.
- Keep your body temperature stable. When we exercise, our body temperature tends to increase, hence the sweat. Cold water can help you to avoid overheating and experiencing dizziness and other symptoms.
- Boost your performance. Being dehydrated can seriously impact your ability to perform well in your sport or exercise form of choice. Stay hydrated to perform at your best and achieve any personal goals.
It’s worth noting, as the British Heart Foundation points out, that you might be sweating even when you don’t realise it, so drinking water throughout any form of exercise is a must. Take swimming, for example.
While many people don’t think they’re sweating while they swim because of the water, they are. Swimming long distances without pausing to drink water can have a negative effect not just on your performance but on your health, too.
